What is a Certified Hypnotherapist?
A Certified Hypnotherapist (C.Ht) assists their client to utilize the ancient, natural state of hypnosis to heal from trauma, phobias, anxieties, and habits such as smoking or eating disorders, Stress Management and much more.

The client does the inner work through the facilitation of the Hypnotherapist.
Christianity and Hypnosis
Jesus says in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.”
Hypnosis is one of the gifts of God which help people experience the “more abundant life.”
The Bible also says that the Kingdom of heaven is within us.
With Hypnosis the client is guided to that part within to find the answers that he could not tap into consciously.
Hypnosis is neither anti-religious nor pro-religious. It can be used for good or bad, depending on the hypnotist and the subject. Today, most religious groups accept the proper ethical use of hypnosis for helping people.
Hypnosis can be a very helpful tool in counseling, hypnosis can be used for growth, health and it benefits of people.
Hypnosis is mistakenly viewed as mind control or demonic by many misinformed people. People come for Hypnosis to take control of their life, not to be controlled. The desire to change has to come within.
Hypnosis is no more mind control than watching TV, listening to a political speech, or attending a worship service. A person will not do anything under hypnosis that is against his/her will or belief.
In the book of Acts, it refers that Peter is going into a trance (the Greek word is ekstasis from which we get ‘ecstasy’) and both events are reported as both positive and significant.
Various churches oppose hypnosis are using the principles of hypnosis (relaxation, concentration, suggestion, repetition) in their healing services, they denounce hypnosis.
Many Christian are unable to accept hypnotic-based interventions when it could be very helpful in dealing with physical and emotional issues.
Christians will often report with surprise that the experience is spiritually beneficial, as it is possible to incorporate prayer and meditation into the therapeutic process.
People who have been smoking for years, no longer smoke due to hypnotherapy and at a much higher rate than patches, gum or drugs.
People are released from fears in a few sessions that have been going to therapy for years. Fear of flying, fear of snakes and much more.
People in pain have had pain reduced or eliminated. When Leonie did her advance pain management course in 2009 her dentist removed 3 root canals without using any anesthetic, without pain using hypnosis.
More and more moms use hypnosis in child birthing where the mom does not need to take any drugs, a positive for both baby and Mom.
Cancer patients have been able to take chemo without some of the side effects and have helped reduce the pain.
Burned patients have been able to have 3rd degree burns reduced where hypnosis was used within the first few hours following burns, reducing pain.
These are blessings from God to be used to help relieve suffering emotionally and spiritually.
Can anybody be hypnotized?
Firstly we need to mention that all hypnosis is in fact self-hypnosis.
It is a natural state through which we go several times a day, certainly on our way to sleep, and just before we are waking up.
Most of us have driven a car and then sometimes don’t consciously remember certain parts of the trip, or being so absorbed while reading or watching a movie that we don’t pay attention to anything else happening around us – these are all the states of selective awareness.
Everyone has the ability to go into a state of hypnosis. Some people are naturally more suggestible than others and that is why the stage hypnotist will select them for his show.
The main reason for people to not freely enter the state is usually apprehension and lack of awareness or fear.
In the therapeutic environment, it is the task of the hypnotherapist to dispel any misconceptions and a skilled professional will usually then have no problem facilitating the state for his or her client.
What makes an ideal candidate for hypnotherapy?
The ideal candidate only needs to bring a sincere wish to participate.
A skilled hypnotherapist will understand whether his client should be approached through his enhanced ability of imagery or via his analytical thinking.
Highly analytical people usually are very good subjects once they understand that the client always maintains control and are in charge at any given time.
The client will understand that he will do nothing against his own beliefs and will.
What enhances success in hypnotherapy?
Motivation! When the client wants to change the behaviors that is not serving him anymore, to make positive change by being honest with themselves, and there is no secondary gain from their behavior and symptoms for example a person with chronic pain may want to be free of it and on the other hand fears to lose the attention he receives because of the symptoms. A positive outcome may resolve it.
Are the results permanent?
Once an idea has been fully accepted by the subconscious mind it will remain.
That is partly the reason why it is so difficult to overcome habits. For example, the smoker may have the subconscious belief that smoking the cigarette will relax him, then these beliefs are fixed and it can be extremely difficult to override these programs with willpower and discipline.
When a new idea is fully accepted and there is no contradicting belief system, like you are a non-smoker now, it will remain for good.
How does hypnotherapy work on the brain?
Do you remember a time when you received your driver’s license and how difficult it was at the time to coordinate all the different tasks and be observant to the traffic around? Over time, with practice, you became more and more proficient to the point where shifting gears and any other task involved with driving became automatic.
Once these pathways are created and strengthened with practice and repeating it, we tend to operate this way without effort.
With Hypnosis the client will create new ways of thinking.
The first part is to change the mind.
The subconscious mind does not differentiate between “reality” and imagery or visualization. The subconscious is like a Yes man: When you tell yourself that you are fat and ugly, the subconscious affirms that.
We can repeat a new behavior and strengthen it by reprogramming the mind with positive affirmations and using all your senses by affirming that you are your thinner self with love and acceptance.
After the session(s) when the client finds himself in a situation which previously prompted him to have a certain behavior or habit, he has the ability to follow a different pattern effortlessly.
Does medical aid pay for hypnotherapy in SA?
There is a distinction between the clinical hypnotherapist, who needs to be a Quantified Psychologist, who is registered with a practice number and the “non-medical” hypnotherapist that does not require a practice number.
What should you look for in a hypnotherapist?
The hypnotherapist is the facilitator to assist the client to find his own solutions; this requires skills, responsibility, sensitivity and experience.
Can you hypnotize yourself successfully with a CD?
Hypnosis is self-hypnosis and we enter this state naturally and can be extremely beneficial. When seeing a professional on stop smoking, working with the root cause the CD will reinforce the new changes to reach full potential.
The importance of seeing a professional Hypnotherapist
Hypnosis occurs when the body and mind are in a deep state of relaxation.
You will not lose consciousness but your mind will be in an altered state of heightened awareness, called the Theta state.
In this state, the subconscious mind is open to be influenced in a positive way.
The hypnotherapist will help you to deal with any issue of a psychosomatic nature such deep-seated habits and unwanted behavior and the creation of new and desired behavior patterns.
A sure way of retraining those natural skills is really with a professional who can explain how the mind works, answer questions, explain what to expect and most importantly, assist the person to get to and understand this powerful state.
The subconscious mind is ready to receive new suggestions or ideas the listener needs a professional to work with, the attempt to deal with deeply embedded programs and/or suppressed emotions, the root cause of the problem and then reprogram the mind.
We all know deep within what is best for us.
What is Regression therapy?
Awareness is the key to change. If we are not aware of what is holding us back, giving us certain symptoms or habits we will only work on the surface with minimal and temporary results.
Using regression in hypnosis the clients has the opportunity to uncover the real original cause and onset of their concerns.
Going back in time to the root or origin of where the issue started. A lot of our issues started when we were small or even still in the womb.
How many Hypnotherapy sessions are required?
A skilled Hypnotherapist can bring about change in the shortest time.
A therapy plan is usually discussed between the therapist and the client after the initial consultation.
Hypnotherapy as shown by the statistic on Leonie’s home page, the success rate is quite fast in relation to other modalities.
Depending on the work that needs to be done, a program is worked out that will fit and benefit the client.
What is Past Life Regression
To connect to our past (or future) we need to understand how this information is stored, how it may affect us, and can be accessed.
Old patterns that seem to repeat over and over, making the same mistakes, repeating karma. The origin lies in a past life or a fragment of self in the imagination. It needs to be revisited, to understand the lesson out of it and then changed it in the subconscious mind to form a new thought and to change it for the better. Understanding the past creates awareness to heal the current life and also the future.
Can Hypnosis assist in Weight Loss?
Find the reason why you overeat. When this is dealt with the desire and cravings to overeat will diminish by itself effortlessly.
You will find that weight issues usually have an underlying problem of which the person usually is not aware of.
With Hypnosis the root cause of the overeating is identified and the skilled Hypnotherapist will guide the client to correct changes and also the Hypnotherapist gives the client tools to change old negative thinking patterns and beliefs about self.
With Hypnosis this can be explored, examined and reassessed for the better.
Does Hypnotherapy always work?
There is no guarantee for any modality or therapy to always work.
The first session will establish quickly whether the client and therapist are suited to each other and whether the client is indeed willing and open to change.
Fear to be hypnotize will prevent the client from entering this natural state, but a good therapist will dispel the myth and create a foundation of trust which is necessary.
Then there are conditions whereby the “benefits” derived from an unwanted habit outweigh letting go of it.
For example fear of weight gain when giving up smoking.
A professional therapist will cover these possibilities with the client and work through them.
